Soft Tissue Mobilization & Manual Therapy in Thousand Oaks, CA

Many pain conditions are rooted in joint restrictions, fascial adhesions, or muscle trigger points that exercise alone cannot resolve. At Reform Physical Therapy in Thousand Oaks, hands-on manual therapy is led by our team: Sejal, Heeren, Omri, Amanda, Taryn, Karen, Lauren, Auzar, and Nicole.

Every manual therapy session at Reform PT is delivered one-on-one by a licensed therapist, never by an aide. We serve patients from Thousand Oaks (91360, 91362), Camarillo, Newbury Park, Westlake Village, and Moorpark.

What Is Soft Tissue Mobilization?

Manual therapy in physical therapy refers to skilled, hands-on clinical techniques applied by a licensed PT to joints, muscles, and fascia to restore mobility, reduce pain, and prepare the body for active rehabilitation through techniques including joint mobilization, myofascial release, and dry needling.

Our Approach at Reform Physical Therapy

Maitland Joint Mobilization (Grades I-V) applies oscillatory or sustained pressure to a joint to restore arthrokinematic motion. Grade I and II are used for pain modulation. Grade III and IV target mechanical joint restrictions. Grade V (HVLA thrust) is applied selectively after thorough assessment and with patient consent.

Myofascial Release addresses fascial restrictions and trigger points through sustained, manual pressure into restricted tissue. Sejal Doshi, PT holds certification in Myofascial Release and has applied this technique across diverse musculoskeletal conditions for over 25 years.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM / Graston Technique) uses specialized tools to detect and treat soft tissue fibrosis, scar tissue, and restrictions that hands-on palpation may miss.

Dry Needling uses thin monofilament needles to target myofascial trigger points, releasing muscle tension and reducing referred pain. It is based on musculoskeletal anatomy and differs from acupuncture in its clinical rationale. All contraindications are screened before use.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Manual therapy and dry needling are modified or deferred for patients with active local infection, bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy, implanted devices in the treatment area, active malignancy, confirmed or suspected fracture, and severe osteoporosis (for HVLA techniques). Your therapist screens all contraindications before beginning.

Clinical Tools & Assessment: Techniques and certifications include: Maitland Joint Mobilization (Grades I-V), Myofascial Release (certification), IASTM / Graston Technique, dry needling (trigger point assessment and mapping), Kinesiotaping, cupping (static and dynamic), Functional Manual Therapy (FMT), neurodynamic (nerve) mobilization, lymphatic drainage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Manual therapy is skilled, hands-on treatment applied by a licensed PT to joints, muscles, and connective tissue. Techniques include joint mobilization, myofascial release, and nerve mobilization to reduce pain and restore movement that exercise alone cannot achieve.

Soft tissue mobilization treats muscle tightness, scar tissue, trigger points, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, and post-surgical mobility restrictions. It also prepares joints for exercise when stiffness limits movement.

No. Massage targets relaxation and circulation. Manual therapy performed by a licensed PT is a clinical intervention targeting specific joint restrictions, nerve mobility, and fascial dysfunction with both therapeutic and diagnostic intent that massage does not have.

Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points to release muscle tension using thin needles. It is based on musculoskeletal anatomy and differs from acupuncture, which follows traditional Chinese medicine principles. Both use needles, but the clinical rationale and target structures differ.

Many patients notice immediate improvement in range of motion and pain reduction after a single session. Lasting results typically require 4 to 8 sessions combined with a therapeutic exercise program to reinforce and maintain the mobility gains.

Manual therapy performed by a licensed PT is covered under most commercial insurance plans and Medicare when part of a medically necessary PT program. Our team verifies your coverage before your first visit at no cost.
