Patients come to us from Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Westlake Village, and across Ventura County.
What Is Balance Therapy?
Balance therapy retrains the vestibular system, proprioceptive input, and visual systems responsible for stability, using progressive clinical exercises, vestibular repositioning techniques, and functional gait training to reduce fall risk and restore confident daily movement.

Our Approach at Reform Physical Therapy
Every program begins with standardized fall risk screening. We use the Berg Balance Scale (a score below 45 indicates high fall risk), the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and the Dynamic Gait Index to establish a measurable baseline.
The Dix-Hallpike test is used to diagnose BPPV specifically a simple bedside test that identifies which semicircular canal has displaced calcium crystals. Once diagnosed, the Epley repositioning maneuver can resolve symptoms in one to two sessions for most patients.
Vestibular rehabilitation exercises use a principle called habituation and adaptation gradually exposing the visual and vestibular systems to movements that provoke symptoms, teaching the brain to recalibrate its balance processing.
Progressive balance training on varied surfaces (foam, uneven terrain, dual-task conditions) rebuilds the proprioceptive and neuromuscular responses that aging and neurological conditions erode.
Lower extremity strengthening particularly of the ankles, hips, and core is a primary fall prevention strategy independent of vestibular treatment. Strong muscles catch falls that the balance system alone cannot prevent.
A structured home exercise program is provided at every visit. Caregiver and family education is included when appropriate.
Clinical Tools & Assessment: Assessment tools include: Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go (TUG), Dix-Hallpike test (BPPV diagnosis), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Functional Gait Assessment (FGA), computerized balance platform assessment, Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Key signs include grabbing surfaces to steady yourself, a fall in the past year, dizziness when rolling over in bed or looking up, feeling unsteady in the dark or on uneven ground, or a physician flagging fall risk. Any one of these warrants a formal balance evaluation
Common causes include BPPV (inner ear crystal displacement), vestibular neuritis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, medication side effects, and age-related decline in strength and proprioception. A PT evaluation identifies which system is involved and guides treatment accordingly.
BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo. It is caused by displaced calcium crystals in the inner ear’s semicircular canals. It is diagnosed with the Dix-Hallpike test and treated with the Epley repositioning maneuver, which most patients find resolves symptoms in one to two sessions.
Generic exercise does not systematically challenge the vestibular, proprioceptive, and visual systems in a graded, clinical way. Balance PT uses specific tools (Dix-Hallpike, Berg, TUG), vestibular techniques, and progressive surface challenges that general fitness programs do not include.
Most patients see meaningful improvement in 6 to 10 sessions. BPPV often resolves in 1 to 2 sessions. A home exercise program is always provided so gains continue after formal discharge.
Yes. Balance rehabilitation and fall prevention PT are covered by Medicare Part B when medically necessary. Our team verifies your specific coverage and any cost-sharing before your first visit at no cost to you.
